
Sea Law and Contemporary Issues on the Indo-Pacific Proposal, Indonesia’s Role as Chair of Asean 2023″.

On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, the Faculty of Law, University of Bengkulu, held a National Seminar on “Development of International Sea Law and Contemporary Issues on Indo-Pacific Proposals, Indonesia’s Role as Chair of Asean 2023”. This seminar was presented by Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana, S.H., L.LM., Ph.D. (Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Indonesian Law and Chancellor of Achmad Yani University) and Dr. Ema Septaria, S.H., M.H. (Lecturer in International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Bengkulu) as a guest speaker moderated by Arini Azka Muthia, S.H., M.H. (Lecturer in International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Bengkulu).

The dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Bengkulu, Dr. Amancik, S.H., M.Hum, opened this activity. In his remarks, the dean said that diplomacy in the law of the sea is one of the great successes and a real contribution from the Indonesian nation in coloring the formation of international law, especially in the maritime field. Undeniably, the concept of an archipelagic state regulated in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which we know as UNCLOS 1982, was driven by one of the Indonesian legal officers and diplomats. At least the big names of Prof. Mocthar Kusumaadmaja, diplomat Hasyim Djalal and others names are listed. All of these names have made the history of their contribution to the law of the sea. Of course, the spirit of participating in the world arena that Indonesia carries out is in line with the nation’s ideals as stated in the Preamble (Preamble) of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, namely participating in maintaining world order and eternal peace.

Then, Prof. Hikmahanto explained the Development of International Law of the Sea and Contemporary Issues in the South China Sea. He also explained the geopolitical situation that made the South China Sea a security issue. In response to this, the government’s move is to ensure that China recognize Indonesia’s EEZ, maintain security stability in South China Sea, anda Ensuring that tensions that lead to a cold war do not escalate into a hot war.

Next, Dr Ema Septaria, S.H., M.H. delivered material on the Exclusive Economic Zone: Degradation of Fish Resources and Indonesia’s Role as Chair of ASEAN 2023. He also explained the development of sea law from the time of the Roman Empire until now. EEZ settings in UNCLOS 1982, and Encouraging cooperation between member countries in real projects based on common interests while supporting Indonesia’s national interests in the form of treaties.
